SAMBALPUR: The VSS Medical College and Hospital, Burla, has ordered a probe into alleged rotting of blood in refrigerators at different departments .
The recklessness came to light on Tuesday when members of a local NGO did not find two units of blood collected for two patients a few days ago. About 80 units of blood were found dumped in a defunct fridge at the gynaecology ward of VSS.
"It is sheer negligence on the part of doctors and nurses of the hospital," said Nihal Singh, a social campaigner associated with the NGO.

Hospital sources said blood bags should be returned to the blood bank within 30 minutes in case these remain unused to prevent wastage.
Following a hue and cry over the issue, VSS superintendent L K Das said, "We have decided to conduct a departmental probe. Action will be taken against those found guilty." "We have also decided against storing blood in the fridges at the hospital," he added.
